On the way to 100% RES
As part of Greening The Islands Foundation’s 100% RES Islands Initiative , Curaçao has identified a roadmap to 100% renewable power. Curaçao is undertaking this significant transition towards a sustainable energy supply with a focus on the installation of large-scale photovoltaic system coupled with battery storage systems. To support this goal, three of the world's leading research institutes in the field of energy systems will compete in our ees Islands Challenge – Greening the Island of Curaçao. You can be there live at the ees Innovation Hub at ees Europe in Munich from May 7–9, 2025, when the teams develop and present their innovative solutions for the future of Curaçao. Visit the teams at their booth (hall B0, booth B0.160), or get in touch with Greening the Island Foundation and representatives of Curaçao at their booth (hall B0, booth B0.340 E).

The participating teams of the ees Islands Challenge will explore and propose viable solutions to integrate different PV configurations: Ground Mounted PV, Agrivoltaics, greenhouse and Floating PV. The goal is to develop a holistic strategy encompassing three key steps:
Battery energy storage is the central pillar of the challenge, as it ensures grid stability, enhances energy security, and enables the optimal integration of renewable energy into Curaçao’s infrastructure. Each configuration of electricity generation and storage presents unique technical, environmental, and economic challenges that must be thoroughly assessed. An additional key aspect to the challenge will be the urban regeneration of a large ex refinery located in the centre of Curaçao’s capital, which has been largely out of service since 2019. Participants must develop solutions that align with the island’s geographical, economic and social conditions while addressing key environmental and sustainability factors.
