How Resilience and Inventiveness Can Turn Crises Into New Opportunities

Chapter 4 of the anniversary publication 10 years of ees Europe

Back to the anniversary page

Four chapters on how ees Europe evolved from a small exhibition alongside Intersolar Europe to become Europe’s largest and most international exhibition for batteries and energy storage systems.

Chapter 4 sheds light on how resilience and inventiveness can turn crises into new opportunities.

2020: The Covid-19 pandemic: a crisis threatening the existence of the event industry and a boost to digitization

In 2020, measures to contain the spread of Covid make it impossible to hold exhibitions and conferences. While the storage and solar industries are booming, the exhibition industry, and thus ees Europe, is going through an existential crisis.

But even in this difficult time, things continue: In the series "The smarter E goes digital", Solar Promotion GmbH and conference subsidiary Conexio-PSE start organizing online events, webinars and podcasts featuring specialists from businesses, research institutions and associations in 2020. They collaborate with research institutions and associations to publish studies and expert interviews and thus remain a driving force for the new energy world. But despite all the efforts, it is becoming clear that in the long term, only the successful implementation of real exhibitions can provide a viable financial basis.

2021: The exhibition restart succeeds ‒ and green hydrogen becomes a hot topic

The exhibition date planned for 2021 is postponed from June to July and then has to be canceled altogether. But the organizers of The smarter E Europe do not give up and set a new event date for October. The companies that have the courage to participate as exhibitors are richly rewarded: At The smarter E Europe Restart in October 2021, the number of exhibitors is just a third, and the number of visitors is just over half of the number before the pandemic, but they do excellent business after the months-long forced break.

Meanwhile, battery storage systems of all sizes have become firmly established in the market, ees Europe continues to develop and adds another topic: green hydrogen as the key to a renewable energy system is the focus of a three-day lecture program at the Green Hydrogen Forum, which has been part of the ees Europe exhibition program every year since 2021. A separate exhibition area, the Green Hydrogen Forum & Expo, gives more visibility to suppliers of hydrogen and power-to-gas solutions.

2024: Over 1,000 energy storage exhibitors expected in Munich

Europe's largest and most international exhibition for batteries and energy storage systems can look back on extraordinarily successful exhibition days in June 2023. More than 950 suppliers presented innovations from the fields of batteries and energy storage systems at ees Europe and the accompanying trade shows Intersolar Europe, Power2Drive Europe, EM-Power Europe.

Their high relevance for a renewable, decentralized and digital energy world is reflected in the numbers: the exhibition space of ees Europe more than doubled compared to last year, and about half of the 106,000 visitors to The smarter E specifically attended ees Europe. Scientists, experts and entrepreneurs from around the world also experienced an extensive supporting program of conferences, forums and side events.

The next ees Europe will be held as part of The smarter E Europe from June 19 to 21 at the Munich Exhibition Center - and will celebrate its milestone birthday! Celebrate with us!

How to Win on the BESS Integration Playing Field

Tuesday, May 06, 2025, 11:30 am - 01:00 pm

ICM München Room 5

While global battery energy storage system (BESS) deployment is growing at a rapid pace, system integration remains a crucial but challenging step in the value chain. Increasing margin pressure from low-cost competition, changing customer demands and regulatory uncertainty are some of the most common headaches. To win on this playing field, players must constantly adapt, differentiating themselves with new products and technologies, while reducing prices in order to stay competitive. In this panel, global BESS integrators share their successful approaches and lessons learned to win in an ever-dynamic market.

New Challenges, New Opportunities: Next Level

Tuesday, May 06, 2025, 04:30 pm - 06:00 pm

ICM München Room 5

Energy storage is usually not an end in itself. The technical and financial benefits are always the main concern. However, it is often difficult to prove the profitability of use cases. Acquisition or operating costs are often still too high in relation to returns. But the market is changing, and new framework conditions and regulations are creating opportunities for new use cases. The most attended session of the ees Conference 2024 already gave you an overview. In 2025, we will take this format to the next level. In this session, you will learn more about the latest challenges and how to overcome them to create financially profitable use cases.

How to Avoid Nasty Surprises at the End of a (Battery's) Life

Wednesday, May 07, 2025, 09:00 am - 10:30 am

ICM München Room 5

Choosing a battery storage system is a bit like choosing a spouse. If you're not careful, you could be in for a nasty surprise. At first, you may be blinded by appearances and not discover the flaws until later in life. The same goes for battery storage systems. In 2024, more new battery storage systems were introduced than ever before. Suppliers continue to outdo each other with promises of high functionality and low prices while buyers compare product features and prices to select a system that best meets their needs. But are these criteria enough, or are there hidden risks, especially toward the end of a battery's service life? For example, according to the European Battery Regulation, distributors are required to pay the cost of taking back and recycling the battery modules. However, what are the costs and risks for the buyer if the battery storage system was imported from a non-EU country, or if the importer or manufacturer has closed its site in the EU? Join this session to learn more about the risks at the end of a battery's service life.
