No Stable and Secure Energy System Without Storage

The smarter E Podcast Episode 174 | May 9, 2024 | Language: German

Germany needs storage systems for the energy transition, and not just small photovoltaic home storage systems, but also large-scale storage systems. That is now the consensus. The question is no longer whether we need storage systems, but how we can achieve the necessary expansion and what framework conditions need to be created. So far, the expansion in Germany has been driven mainly by behind-the-meter storage systems, mainly private storage systems, but increasingly also commercial storage systems. However, the market for large-scale storage systems is now also gaining momentum. This is evidenced by several large-scale projects in Germany. What are the specific developments? Why do we need large-scale storage systems?

Hans Urban, freelance consultant for renewable energy, e-mobility and storage, tells us this and more.

Timeline:

  • 03:50 Importance of large-scale storage for stabilizing the grid through renewable energies: How does large-scale storage work and what are the benefits?
  • 14:21 What economic effects could large-scale storage systems have on energy costs and grid services in the long term?
  • 18:55 What short and long-term strategies do you think are necessary to achieve the necessary expansion of large-scale storage? Is a new regulation of trade tax or grid charges needed?
  • 16:55 What role do electric cars play in the expansion of large-scale storage systems? Won't the many e-cars make large-scale storage systems superfluous anyway?
  • 18:08 Eco Stor project in Schleswig-Holstein: What are the technical challenges and opportunities regarding the integration of large-scale storage systems with photovoltaic and wind power plants?
